If you have a deck, you probably have deck lights. If you don’t, you’ve most likely thought about adding lights to your deck. Deck lights can make a huge difference in the appearance and the usability of your deck at night. Lighting will give your deck a festive appeal, and illumination will make your outdoor area safer and much more user-friendly.

Types of deck lights

All kinds of deck lights are available, so you’re sure to find just what you need. If you just want to highlight your railings, you might choose string lights or tube lights. Both are inexpensive and are readily available in many home and garden centers. During the Christmas season, you can find them just about everywhere. These types of deck lights are powered either by electricity or by the sun. The electric deck lights must be plugged into an electrical outlet, but solar deck light solely on the sun, so there’s no need for cords  or for an electrical source.

String lights are available in all sorts of shapes, including lots of whimsical motifs. These deck lights add a lot of fun to any party or outdoor function, and you can find them to compliment just about any theme. For a luau, you might want to use tiny lights in the form of coconuts, pineapples, or hibiscus flowers. For a beach party, you can choose lights in the shape of surfboards, seashells, or pink flamingoes. For an outdoor Christmas party, you might like tiny Santas, snowmen, or reindeer. For a St. Patrick’s Day bash, try the deck lights in the shape of shamrocks or leprechauns. A Cinco de Mayo fiesta? No problem – you’ll find sombrero lights, chili pepper lights, and burro lights. The choices are practically endless!

Another type of deck lights that’s great for outdoor entertaining are umbrella lights. Most deck owners have a table and chairs set with a large umbrella in the center. Umbrella lights attach to the spokes and pole of the umbrella, providing soft light for everyone seated at the table. Umbrella lights are available in solar and electric models.

If you want to focus light on just one area of your deck, you can use deck lights for that, too, with a spot light. The spot light might be affixed to the roof of your home or atop a pole, and you’ll find both traditional and solar spot lights available. If your deck is adjacent to an entryway into your home, you might want to purchase a motion-sensor light that comes on automatically when something crosses its path. These types of deck lights add security by discouraging burglars. They can also help light the way for guests. You’ll find that they come in handy when you’re outside fumbling for your keys, also.
