The Small Chandelier
67
A small chandelier is a wonderful way to add understated elegance to practically any small room in your home. Small chandeliers come in ornate styles, antique styles, rustic styles, and sleek, modern styles, so you’ll have no problem finding one that’s right for you.
What exactly defines a “chandelier”?
Chandeliers have been popular for centuries. The first ones, of course, came about long before electricity had been harnessed, so the earliest versions were made of candles. By the 1400s, chandeliers were a status symbol for the nobility, the wealthy, and the upper-middle class.
The modern definition of chandelier is a decorative light fixture that’s suspended from the ceiling. Typically, a chandelier has two or more arms that are equipped with lights. Many are also adorned with dangling ornaments, beads, and other decorations.
Today, however, many chandeliers might contain only a single light and lack the numerous arms and ornaments that were common a couple of decades ago. The chandelier might be wired directly from the ceiling, or it might be suspended from the ceiling by a hook and its cord plugged into a nearby electrical outlet.
What types of small chandeliers are available?
No matter what your decorating style is, you’ll find a chandelier to match it or compliment it perfectly. There are countless types of small chandeliers! You’ll find finishes in wrought iron, brass, bronze, pewter, satin platinum, silver, and chrome. The light bulbs might look like candles, or they could be surrounded by globes or individual mini lampshades.
Of course, “small” is a relative term. What might be considered small by one person might not seem small to another. When it comes to chandeliers, some are huge. Ornate chandeliers are sometimes over six feet tall and almost four feet in diameter, so obviously, that type won’t fall into the “small” category.
The smallest and simplest chandeliers are the pendant chandeliers. This small chandelier is usually a single light housed in a glass globe or pendant. These are available in several finishes and in several globe designs and colors.
Another type of small chandelier is the mini chandelier. This type of fixture might have several arms and be complete with ornaments. It’s actually just a scaled-down version of a larger, traditional chandelier.
The lantern chandelier is another popular choice. This type of small chandelier usually consists of a single light or two lights suspended in a lantern-type housing.
Where to use a small chandelier
A chandelier should match the room in size. You wouldn’t want to use a large chandelier in a small room because it would overwhelm the space. Small chandeliers are excellent options for foyers, bathrooms, and hallways.
How much does a small chandelier cost?
There’s a wide price range for small chandeliers, depending on which type you select. Pendant chandeliers can usually be found for around $100. Ornate mini chandeliers range from around $250 up to almost $1,000. Hand-crafted chandeliers or those constructed of special materials might cost several thousand dollars.
Where can I find the best selection of small chandeliers?
You can probably find a few small chandeliers at any lighting store or home improvement warehouse. If you’re looking for a unique small chandelier at a great price, however, shop online.
