Make a Statement with Red Cushions
67
There’s no doubt about it – red is a dramatic color, and it’s extremely popular in the form of red cushions. Red is also very versatile, and it can be made “warmer” or “cooler” depending on the specific shade used. For example, reds with yellow or golden undertones can add warmth to any area, while reds with blue undertones are cooler.
Types of red cushions
Red cushions are available in solid colors, prints, and patterns. You might select crisp red and white striped cushions, red cushions with a white geometrical design, or red cushions with embroidered motifs. The choices are practically endless.
Red cushions come in a wide range of sizes and styles, too, including thin cushions, plain cushions, tufted cushions, overstuffed cushions, and cushions with ruffled edges.
Materials include cotton, silk, polyester, velvet, corduroy, woven fabrics, and faux suede. For outdoor use, special water-resistant materials are used for both the outer covering and the stuffing material.
Where to use red cushions
Red cushions can be used in any room in the house, along with outdoor seating areas on decks and patios.
Picture the appealing contrast of a red cushion in a white wicker chair, or a comfy red cushion on your lounge by the pool.
In the kitchen, red-and-white checked cushions would look great atop bar stools or on chair seats to give the room an inviting country look. For a French kitchen, consider red cushions with a white toile design. Pepper and apple motifs are both popular themes for today’s kitchens, and few colors are better accents for these types of décor than red cushions.
In the family room, red cushions can add interest and pizzazz to wooden rocking chairs, Windsor chairs, and ladder-back chairs. Longer cushions can add color and comfort to deacon’s benches, too. If you have a white or cream sofa that needs new cushions, consider purchasing new cushions in red, or having the old ones re-upholstered in a shade of red. The red will look smart with cream or white, and the red cushions won’t show dirt nearly as much as the lighter colors.
Don’t overlook red cushions when it comes to the bedroom, either. They go great in kids’ rooms that are done in primary colors, and in adult bedrooms that use floral motifs. Some shade of red can be an attractive accent color to just about any color scheme and style.
With navy and white nautical themes, red cushions can add a splash of color. Warmer shades of red also look great with earth tones, and true reds go well with black.
Where to buy red cushions
You can find a limited assortment of red cushions in most home improvement stores, department stores, and even places like Walmart and Kmart. Some of the larger pool and outdoor living stores carry the patio cushions, too. The problem with shopping at these types of stores is that your choices will generally be very few.
For a much larger selection of styles, colors, designs, and prints, shop online. Shopping online makes it easier to comparison shop, too, so you’ll find the best buys on red cushions this way.
