Extra tall bar stools are on the rise, so to speak. Just look around next time you’re out for an evening on the town. Most upscale restaurants and bars have at least one area with these lofty stools, and guests usually clamor for those seats first. Why are they so popular?

Extra tall bar stools allow you to have an elevated position, which allows you a better view. The tall stools also allow you to stretch out your legs, if you wish, but most of the extra tall bar stools also have rungs or footrests, too, in case you have short legs or don’t wish to “stretch out.”

What are extra tall bar stools?

Extra tall bar stools are stools that range in height from 33 to 36 inches. They’re taller than traditional bar stools, hence the name.

Different types of extra tall bar stools

Extra tall bar stools come in every style imaginable. Many people prefer backless bar stools so that they can easily be stored under a counter when not in use. Others prefer the comfort that backed bar stools provide.

Extra tall bar stools might swivel, making it easy to get on and off the stool when it’s under a bar top or counter. Other types of extra tall bar stools are stationary, much like a chair with long legs.

Extra tall bar stools might be round, square, or rectangular in shape. The frame or base can be the same shape as the seat, or it might be in a different shape. For example, some extra tall bar stools with round seats have four legs in a square configuration.

You’ll find extra tall bar stools in a variety of materials, too. The legs and frame might be made of wood, bronze, brushed nickel, or chrome. Some of the more modern types of stools have PVC frames. The seats might be made of the same material as the legs, or they might be vinyl, cloth, leather, woven rush, or suede.

Wooden extra tall bar stools might be stained, lacquered, painted, or distressed. Metal finishes can be shiny, antiqued, matte, painted, or hand-rubbed oiled.

As far as styles go, you shouldn’t have a problem finding extra tall bar stools to match your other furniture, no matter what style, period, or decorating motif you use.

One of the most popular styles for bar stools is the chrome and vinyl retro stools. These are reminiscent of the old-fashioned soda fountain stools of yesteryear. The padded vinyl-cushioned tops come in a wide range of colors, including some with glitter.

Another popular style is the saddle seat extra tall bar stool. These have a carved wood seat that’s slightly concave instead of flat. The seat is contoured to fit the human bottom, so they’re more comfortable than a traditional wooden seat.

One of the most beautiful extra tall bar stools is the oak stool with a scrolled back, gently curving cabriolet legs, and a padded leather seat and back.

Adjustable extra tall bar stools are also available. With these, the height of the stool can be adjusted to suit the sitter.
