Cube shelving is the hip new trend in shelving, and it’s fun and easy. Set the units on a desk, a counter, or a tabletop, hang them on the wall, or place larger units directly on the floor. Add items you want to store or display, and voila! You’re done!
Using cube shelving is a great decorating idea. It gives your rooms a distinct reflection on your individuality and your creativity, and with so many types of cube shelves available, you can find the perfect shelf unit for every room in the house.
What is cube shelving?
Cube shelves are shelving units that consist of several cubes that are usually joined together. The fronts are always open, of course. Sometimes the backs of the cubes are also open, but sometimes they’re not. Cube shelves are somewhat similar to shadowbox frames.
The cube shelving units are arranged in several configurations. Some units are made of three or four side-by-side cubes, while others might consist of a three-cube-over-three-cube design. There are also asymmetrical groupings, like two cubes over five cubes, for example.
Cube shelving vs. traditional shelving
Cube shelving is much trendier and more eye-catching than traditional shelves. The cubes themselves are often interesting, not to mention what you might display in the units. Unlike regular shelves, large cube shelves are wide enough to hold larger objects, and to hold them more securely. Since your displayed items are surrounded on four or five sides, they’re not nearly as likely to get bumped off their place.
Cube shelving is also a great way to display various items in the same area. Each cube can have its own theme without interfering with items in the other cubes.
What are cube shelves made of?
Cube shelving might be constructed of plastic, acrylic, glass, wood, wrought iron, brass, or woven fabrics that have been attached to stiff frames.
Cube shelves come in colors like red, black, green, hot pink, yellow, and a rainbow of other colors. White and clear are also available. The wooden shelves are available in several finishes, but if you want to create your own unique set of cube shelves, purchase an unfinished unit and finish it yourself, just the way you want it. Stain it to match the woodwork or furniture in a room, or paint it a special customized color to match or compliment your décor.
What can be displayed and stored on cube shelving?
Depending on the size of your cubes, you can display or store just about anything in your cubes.
Small cube shelves are great for miniature photos, figurines, thimbles, dainty tea cups, hair bows, jewelry, and makeup.
Medium cubes can be used for DVDs, CDs, small toys, washcloths, and small bottles of perfume.
The larger cubes are great for storing games, stuffed animals, sports equipment, magazines, and books.
Believe me, you’ll find plenty of uses for your cube shelving!
Where to find cube shelving
You might be able to find a few cube shelves at your local department stores or boutiques, but chances are that you won’t be offered much of a choice. To view a huge number of interesting cubes, shop for cube shelving online.
