Caravan blinds are a great way to keep your caravan or motor home cool during the hot months of summer. The also provide privacy year round, and they block out light while you and your family are trying to sleep. If you have any sort of “home on wheels,” read this general overview of blinds!

What are caravan blinds?

Caravan blinds are blinds specially made for caravans, RVs, and motor homes. Installing a set of blinds in an RV is often much different than hanging a set in your home. For one thing, RVs usually have odd-shaped and odd-sized windows. Also, the windows are sometimes slanted, making a traditional set of window blinds unfeasible and practically useless. Regular blinds would be flapping and flying around as the vehicle traveled down the road.

Having caravan blinds installed, or installing them yourself, will make your caravan trips much more enjoyable. They’ll also help you save energy, which is especially important to consider in an RV. Unless you’re at a campsite and hooked up to a source of electricity, you’ll be using your generator, and a generator can handle only so much. Why not help out your air conditioning with the blinds? You’ll be surprised by how much cooler your caravan will be with the use of blinds.

What types of caravan blinds are available?

Caravan blinds fall into one of two basic categories: roller blinds and cassette blinds.

Roller blinds, or rigid roller blinds, are very durable. The backs of these blinds are lacquered to make them resistant to moisture and the harsh rays of the sun. With some roller blinds, you can raise or lower them to any position with a special locking mechanism on the side of the blinds. Roller blinds are available in a wide range of colors, including cream, terracotta, wine, green, blue, and yellow. Some roller blinds are backed with reflective material that reflects the sun’s light, helping to keep your caravan cool.

Cassette blinds are made of fabric and are easily rolled up. They fit into metal guides on the sides of the blinds. When the blinds get soiled, most can be washed in a washing machine. Most cassette blinds are available with reflective silver backing, and some come with fly screens, too.

Before buying your caravan blinds

Before you commit to buying blinds for your caravan or RV, make sure you’ve measured correctly. Most sellers won’t take the blinds back if they don’t fit due to your measuring errors. Also, ask about any warranties, and make sure you get them in writing.

Correct measuring is especially important if you order blinds online. Most manufacturers will provide detailed information about measuring the windows and door of your RV the right way, so follow them carefully.

Where can I find caravan blinds?

You can find different types of blinds for your caravan at most large RV supply stores. Your best bet for finding a wide choice, however, is in online catalog stores. Just remember to figure in shipping costs in addition to the price of the caravan blinds.
