Backless counter stools have been popular for years. The traditional style has always been in the form of backless barstools, which are still popular, but now there are more different types than ever. No matter what your décor is, you’ll find backless counter stools to match or compliment your other furnishings.

What is a backless counter stool?

A backless counter stool is just what the name implies – a stool without a back. These stools usually have four legs, though some might have only three. The sleek pedestal stool has only one “leg” and usually a wide floor base to give it stability.

Backless counter stools range in height to accommodate different areas. With kitchen islands increasing in popularity, the stools might be the height to slide under a dining area that’s of standard counter height. Of course, for more traditional raised bars, you’ll find taller bar stools.

Why backless counter stools?

Backless counter stools and backless barstools are all about casual comfort. Since they don’t have a back, they can be turned in any direction, and so can the person sitting on the stool.

Another advantage of backless counter stools is that they don’t take up much space. When not in use, they can be stored under the table, counter, or bar because there’s no back to prevent it.

Backless counter stools give a room an uncluttered look, too. For example, if you use them at your kitchen bar, there’s no back to obscure your view of the next room, so your kitchen space can flow smoothly into the adjoining room.

Types of backless counter stools

You’ll find a wide range of backless counter stools and backless barstools. The traditional round-topped stools come in plain and padded seats, in a variety of materials, including wood and metal. The padding might be leather, faux leather, vinyl, or cotton. Some have fabric tops that are removable and washable, and some of the seats can even be embossed with your favorite sport team’s logo!

If you’re going for a retro look, check out the round chrome soda fountain bar stools with the padded vinyl seats.

Another type of counter stool is the saddle seat stool. These are almost always constructed of wood. These rectangular stools have a curved seat that lends itself well to the shape of the human bottom, making them very comfortable. Like the round-topped stools, these come with a hard seat or a padded seat.

Counter stools and barstools also come with a square top, and like the other types, they’re available with and without padded seats. If you’re décor is Early American, you might choose one of the square stools with a rush seat.

Wooden barstools are usually made of oak, walnut, or pine, in a wide selection of stains and paint colors. If you want to exactly match your barstools to your other furniture, kitchen cabinets, or molding, buy an unfinished stool and stain or paint it yourself.

Metal counter stools or barstools might have legs with a bronze, white, chrome, black iron, nickel, gold, putty, or brushed steel finish.

Are backless counter stools expensive?

You can find many models of inexpensive backless counter stools. In fact, a traditional wooden backless barstool can be found for under $20. Saddle bar stools cost a little more, starting at around $30. If you want stools with padded seats, expect to pay more. Customized tall brushed steel backless counter stools can cost more than $400.
