Aluminum Loft Ladder

So you’ve finally decided to gain access to your loft or attic with an aluminum loft ladder. Great idea! You’ll be surprised at how much storage space you have over your main house or your garage. Best of all, it’s warm, dry, and free! This sure beats renting a storage building and having to drive to it every time you want to store something or get something out of storage.
Why an aluminum loft ladder?
Aluminum loft ladders are light, durable, and inexpensive. It’s true that they might not be as attractive as wooden or timber loft ladders, but unless you’re leaving the hatch open and the ladder down for long periods of time, who’ll see it?
Types of aluminum loft ladders
Aluminum loft ladders are often sliding ladders. They sit snugly out of sight over the loft hatch door until you need them. At that time, you simple pull open the hatch, and the ladder slides down.
The sliding aluminum loft ladder comes in two-section ladders and three-section ladders. Which one you’ll need depends on the amount of room you have from your floor to your ceiling in the room where the loft hatch is, and on the amount of space you have in the loft or attic itself.
Aluminum loft ladders are also available in folding ladder styles. These ladders simply fold up on themselves and store over the loft hatch until ready for use. They’re easy to use, but they take up more space when stored than do the sliding ladders.
A newer type of aluminum loft ladder is the concertina loft ladder. These ingenious devices fold up to practically nothing when not in use, then pull out to create secure steps when you need them.
When shopping for an aluminum loft ladder, there are several things you need to consider. First of all is the weight rating. How heavy are you? How heavy are the items you’ll want to carry up to the loft? Remember that the weight restriction of the ladder is the total weight that will bear on the ladder. If you weigh 190 pounds, for example, and purchase a ladder rated for 200 pounds, that means you’ll be able to carry only 10 pounds at the time via the loft ladder.
Another aspect to consider when buying an aluminum loft ladder is width. Wider ladders will make climbing and carrying items up and down the ladder much more comfortable.
Depth is also important. That’s the width of each rung or step on the loft ladder. Deeper steps mean more comfort, more stability, and more safety. Your footing will be much more secure on wider steps that it would be on narrow steps or rungs.
For even more stability and safety, you might want an aluminum loft ladder with side rails.
Are aluminum loft ladders easy to install?
Aluminum loft ladders are easy to handle and install due to their light weight. And many come in hatch kits, so they’re already positioned on the loft hatch, making installation a breeze.
How much do aluminum loft ladders cost?
You’ll find that an aluminum loft ladder is very affordable. A basic sliding aluminum loft ladder can be purchased for under $100. Ladders complete with hatch kits, of course, are more expensive, as are the concertina loft ladders.

When selecting an aluminum ladder, remember to consider its rating. In the UK, ladders must conform to British Standards. British Standards come from the British Standards Institute (BSI) and apply to the performance of products.
