Steel garages are something you might want to consider if your home doesn’t have a built-in garage or carport. Even if you do have a built-in, perhaps it’s not large enough to accommodate all your automobiles, motor cycles, boats, and personal watercraft. A steel garage can be much more economical than adding on to your existing structure.

What are steel garages?

Steel garages are enclosed buildings constructed of metal. Each has a roof and at least three sides. Some include four sides, one of which is often fitted with a garage door or doors. You can also find steel garages with entry doors, windows, and other amenities.

Steel garages are built on frames, usually made of galvanized steel. The gauge varies among different manufacturers and different models. Metal panels are then fitted onto the steel frames to form the walls. Most steel garages include a pitched roof that sheds water and snow easily.

With most companies that make and sell steel garages, you’ll have a choice of roof color, a choice of exterior color, and a choice of trim color. You’ll also get to decide the exact size and configuration of your garage. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, you can have a steel garage custom built to your unique specifications.

Uses for steel garages

Of course, the most obvious use for a steel garage is that it serves as a place to park and store your vehicles when they’re not in use. These modern garages are much more versatile than that!

Steel garages make great workshops, for example. Just add some shelves and a work bench, and you have an almost instant place to work and to safely store your tools from the elements.

Steel garages also make efficient storage buildings. In fact, in the larger models, you could designate part of the garage as a workshop and still have room enough for storage space. Store seasonal apparel, holiday decorations, and toys the kids have outgrown.

Steel garages can also function as art studios or craft studios. You’ll have room to organize all your supplies in one place, without having to mess up your house every time you want to paint or create crafts. If you’re buying a steel garage as an arts and crafts studio, be sure to include a window or two to allow in natural light.

Steel garages can even function as game rooms. This would be a great place to put that old pool table or foosball table. Add an old sofa and a table or two, and voila – a game room! Your new game room would allow the kids to get out of the house even in nasty weather.

How much do steel garages cost?

Prices vary among different manufacturers, but generally speaking, price depends on the size of the garage, the strength of the frame and panels, and the specific features you select. The average price for a 10 x 20-foot steel garage is around $2,000.
