A Guide to Cheap Curtains

Cheap curtains don’t have to look cheap. In fact, no one but you has to know that you got a great deal on the curtains in your home. Cheap curtains come in a wide array of fabrics and styles, so you don’t have to spend a proverbial arm and leg for attractive window treatments.

Most cheap curtains are made of polyester, cotton, or jute. You might even find curtains and drapes made of expensive materials like silk and linen in discount bins. If a certain style is being discontinued, most stores will reduce the price. These price reductions could result in expensive curtains becoming cheap curtains!

Cheaper curtain fabrics have come a long way in the past few years. Now, cheaper materials are available that look like their more expensive cousins. You can’t get the quality look without paying the quality price.

Advantages of cheap curtains

Of course, the obvious advantage of cheap curtains is the initial price. You’re going to pay less. They also might have some other advantages, as well. For one thing, cheap curtains are often made of washable fabrics. When they get dingy, you can just toss them in the washing machine and touch them up with an iron. You can’t do this with expensive fabrics like silk and linen.

Another advantage of cheap curtains is that you can change them out often. Who wants to look at the same sets of curtains for decades? If you have a huge investment in your curtains and drapes, you won’t be nearly as willing to change your window treatments. This probably means you won’t be willing to change your décor, either.

Make cheap curtains look more expensive

There are several tricks you can use to make cheap curtains look like more expensive curtains. One way is to use more than one curtain panel on café curtains. This will make them thicker and will imply more “pleats.”

Another way to make cheap curtains look like more expensive window treatments is to add more vertical tiers. If your windows need two tiers, try using three instead.

You can also use valances or toppers to create an impressive window treatment. You might want to use a valance made of wood, or one made of an expensive fabric. You could then use cheap curtains below the valance.

Another good idea is to turn a set of cheap curtains into a balloon valance. This is easy to do. Just choose curtains with rod pockets at the top and bottom. Instead of allowing the curtains to fall to their full length, place the rods about a foot apart, horizontally. This will create a “poof,” or balloon. If the curtain fabric is too thin to hold the shape, you can help by adding wadded-up paper.

Where to buy cheap curtains

You can buy cheap curtains at just about any store that sells home furnishings, including department stores and home improvement stores. Don’t forget to check those discount bins!
